As part of our school improvement plan, this session we are taking part in the ‘1 in 5 Raising Awareness of Child Poverty in Edinburgh’ project. We are in the process of getting a parent focus group together to support us with this. We have implemented a number of measures already to ensure equity for all pupils:
School uniform recycling: We have a selection of used school uniform items which are in good condition. Please ask the school office for more information. We would welcome any donations of used school uniform throughout the year. We will be setting up uniform stalls at upcoming events and parents are welcome to come along and help themselves to any items they may need for their children.
Birthday cakes: Not all families can afford to send in birthday cakes or treats for a whole class when it is their child’s birthday. So that no children are feeling left out, we would ask that birthday cakes or sweets are no longer sent in to school. Instead, Mrs Gowans and Miss Kinnaird will have a special birthday celebration at the end of each week with children who have celebrated a birthday.
Party invitations: Please do not send in party invitations to be handed out in class. All invitations should be given out out-with the school day.
Hardship fund: The Parent Council/PTA will put a percentage of the money they raise in to a school hardship fund which will be used at the school’s discretion to help out pupil’s and families when it comes to trips or excursions.
